4 Ways To Improve Your Band’s Stage Presence At Shows

10'x10' Stage Backdrop

Every band looks for ways to improve their shows on stage for your gigs, large and small. Stage presence is critical to your performance, since the visual experience makes a critical difference in the overall quality of the show and the music.

Here are four great ways to improve your band’s stage presence:

1. Get A Band Backdrop Or Stage Scrims

Custom band backdrops (or stage backdrops) and custom stage scrims are super ways to instantly amp up your shows. Custom band scrims and band backdrops are inexpensive, so any size band – even a brand new, up-and-coming band – can improve their stage presence with an affordable stage backdrop or a set of stage scrims. We know – we are biased. But it’s true, a backdrop or scrims can do amazing things for any band.

For sizes, we recommend 6’x6’ for the stage scrims, and for the stage backdrop you can consider 8’x10’, 10’x15’, 20’x25’ or any size in between or above. Give us a shout – Mendy would love to talk with you to find the right size for your band.

2. Practice Your Moves

At Northcoast Banners, we believe that great performance on stage at your shows is 90 percent preparation and 10 percent execution. Practicing your movements on stage and the specific synchronicity of your moves and your music is absolutely critical – BEFORE your shows.

We have worked with hundreds of bands on their stage backdrops and band scrims, and we’ve watched their shows with their band backdrops or stage scrims in action. We have learned a key lesson: regardless of how well designed the stage backdrop is or how awesome the music sounds, the movements on stage and general vibe from the band members bodies can make the show fly or die. So practice, practice, practice.

3. Design A Stunning Band Backdrop Or Band Scrims

Having seen hundreds of designs from hundreds of bands across the US and Canada, we have gained a lot of insight into what good design looks like – specifically for bands. We have learned:

• Bright colors that contrast sharply against each other create a sharp, vibrant design that will be noticed by everyone in your audience – even in low light venues
• Pastel colors – soft colors like pink, grey, green and purple – blend in with each other and do NOT pop on stage, especially in low-light venues
• Simplicity is best, and less is more. Keep it really simple and minimal, because the less that is on the stage backdrop or stage scrims, the more your actual logo will POP in your fan’s eyeballs.

4. Practice Your Music

This one sounds pretty obvious, but unfortunately many bands miss this foundational point entirely. Music is about practicing – performing is about executing. Your band needs to view the performance on stage – and the stage presence – as the act of execution. If you take this approach, your band will focus a lot more on practicing as a goal in and of itself. Then, the rest (playing on stage) is cakewalk.

6’x6′ stage scrims are an absolute need for a new band. Stage scrims help your band look professional and exciting at your shows. Here are our 4 top reasons why your band needs a set of 6’x6′ band scrims.

1. Brand Your Group

Your music group is no doubt a high-octane, star studded cast of talented young rock stars. But without a set of band scrims, your musical talent won’t be as awesome as it could be. It is critical to brand yourself with 6’x6′ stage scrims. These band scrims can make a huge difference in your branding by providing a visual aid to all your shows.

2. Inexpensive And Huge Impact

We believe that 6’x6′ band scrims are the most inexpensive part of your marketing efforts. You’ll pay a lot of money elsewhere to market your shows, but 6’x6′ stage scrims are a one time, low cost solution to make a HUGE impact on stage.

In fact, our bands often use 6’x6′ band scrims at big outdoor events – and their stage scrims can be seen from miles away. And in small clubs and bars specifically, band scrims look bright, beautiful and can push your brand into stardom.

3. Improve Your Stage Presence

We’re passionate about the 50/50 rule – 50 percent of your show is the music, and the other 50 percent is the entertainment, stage presence and show. You may have the best music in the world, but if your show is not entertaining, the audience won’t have a great time. With a set of 6’x6′ band scrims, you can easily make your stage look amazing and covert your show into an instant HIT featuring YOU as the best band out there. 6’x6′ stage scrims set the stage with your distinct brand, your flavor and your music.

Where To Buy A Custom Band Backdrop For Your Band On Stage

stage backdrops for bands

Get out there, get gigs, buy a band backdrop.

That’s the order of business of every band, especially for new groups. Specifically, we believe in the power of the last item in this to do list. When you buy a band backdrop, you have the ability to do wonders on stage. Stage backdrops are more than just banners – they are just as important as your music.

The 50/50 Rule

Band backdrops for stage are part of our 50/50 rule. This rule is simple:

  • 50 percent of your show is the stage presence, choreography and performance
  • 50 percent is the actual music you play and sing.

So when you buy a band backdrop, you’re meeting an acute need of your bands’ fans by providing them with a high quality stage presence. That’s why we believe that  band backdrops are so key to a good performance, at any show.

Buy The Right Size Band Backdrop

Every band that I work with tells me that size of the band backdrop they buy or the stage scrim is a factor of how big their venues are. When you’re playing at huge festival, you need your logo to be seen for miles. But your budget may not allow for two stage backdrops, and if majority of your shows are in small venues, that huge band backdrop just won’t fit in a small bar. To learn more about sizes on stage, click here to view our photo gallery. This will give you a visual aid to understanding how band backdrops and band scrims actually look on stage. You can always email Mendy or  call me directly and we will be happy to guide you in this process.

Where To Buy A Backdrop?

“Our family, friends and fans were blown away with how good our backdrop looked.”

Instead of us telling you, we’ll let Scott Trudeau from Tribute, a celebration of Allman Brothers  in Atlanta, GA band say it in his words about his band backdrop:

“Everyone in the band and all our family, friends and fans were blown away with how good our backdrop looked. So, from all of us, THANK YOU! We are so happy with the banners you made for us several months ago. We’ve been using those and have received plenty of compliments on them!

Here’s a photo of their stunning 10’x20′ stage backdrop and two 4’x10′ and either side as well – now that’s stage presence!

Ghostfeeder Gets An Amazing Set of Custom Band Scrims

backdrops for bands - ghostfeeders 3 portrait

New band scrims equals better shows. Bands across the US – like Ghostfeeder, an awesome rock band – are discovering the branding power of a band backdrop or custom band scrims.

“Until you get to a level where your band name is ubiquitous, you absolutely need to take advantage of every opportunity available to hammer your brand into peoples’ heads,” explains Walborn. He points out that bands are challenged with a competitive landscape, with many thousands of bands in performing the US alone. Derek Walborn, the vocalist, programmer and songwriter for the band says his new band scrims from Northcoast Banners are a critical component in their marketing strategy.

6’x6′ band scrims, which is the pair that was purchased by Ghostfeeder are the perfect size for small and large bands. They can help your band’s logo stand out in small venues like bars and and nightclubs. But we have also seen many bands use our stage scrims in large venues like outdoor music festivals or large indoor places. At an affordable rate, you can instantly convert a stage into your own show with custom band scrims.

“It’s hard to stand out in a sea of great bands and musicians,” Walborn says. However, he continues, “NorthCoast makes it a little easier to maximize your exposure and present yourself professionally with great products and artist-driven customer service.”

It’s a small investment with a large return. With a pair of 6’x6′ band scrims, Ghostfeeder band now has the capability to make any stage their own. You can too!backdrops for bands - ghostfeeders 2 landscape

How To Buy Band Scrims

band scrims

Band scrims are affordable stage banners for small and up-and-coming bands. These stage banners, while smaller than large stage backdrops, can make a big difference on stage.

Cost

The cost of a stage scrim depends on two factors:

  • Size of the scrim
  • Material of the scrim

The size of the stage scrim depends on how much space you have on stage, and how large you want your banners to be. It is often helpful to make a list of size venues your band plays at before you buy your band scrims. Stages come in all sorts of sizes, so it’s critical that you to know the dimensions of the stages where you will be playing before you move forward with sizes. We have experience with band banners at hundreds of venues across the US, and we can help you find the right size banner.

For bands on a budget, band scrims are ideal since they are considerably cheaper than large band backdrops – and they can make a big impact even at large, outdoor festivals.

For band scrim materials, we find vinyl mesh to be the most appropriate material. It is a 70/30 weave, which means that you can use these banners as an amp scrim: you can place them right in front of your speakers.

Sizes

Finding the right size is key for any stage banner, but for band scrims, a set of two 6’x6′ vinyl mesh scrims (or stage mesh) are ideal. We have printed this size for many brand new, small bands who have small shows, and it works beautifully in small clubs and bars. We can print scrims at any size – contact us for prices of  ANY size band scrims.

Finishings

We provide high grade finishings on all our stage scrims. Generally, we finish our band scrims with both grommets on all sides and 2.5″ pole pockets on the top and bottom – both at no extra cost – so your band has the option of hanging the banner with a cord, or using a stage stand. Of course, we have other finishings as well, and we can add whichever finishings you need.

Stage Scrims That Look Great At Outdoor Shows

Stage scrims look great indoors in small clubs and bars. In fact, a well-designed band scrim can make for a great stage backdrop or scrim even in a large outdoor venue. Here’s some tips for buying stage and band scrims.

1. Consider your budget

For new and up and coming bands, it’s important to consider your budget before you make any investment. It can be tough starting out, so that’s why we created a Touring Band Special on our band scrims – click here to learn more about the specials. 6’x6′ is our most popular size for stage scrims, and they look great on stage.

2. Prepare your design before you buy a stage banner

Take the time work with a good graphic designer on our band scrim design. Make sure your logo or artwork for your stage backdrop contrasts sharply so that your colors POP. We have some great tips for designing a banner.

3. Buy the right size stage backdrop or scrim

It’s critical to consider how you will use your stage backdrops or band scrims. Do you play indoors mostly, at bars and nightclubs? Or does your band get a lot of outdoor shows at festivals? Think about how much space you’ll have on the stage to set up your stage backdrop, and how you will hang the stage banner.

Here’s some great photos of stage scrims being used indoors and outdoors.
