Every band looks for ways to improve their shows on stage for your gigs, large and small. Stage presence is critical to your performance, since the visual experience makes a critical difference in the overall quality of the show and the music.
Here are four great ways to improve your band’s stage presence:
1. Get A Band Backdrop Or Stage Scrims
Custom band backdrops (or stage backdrops) and custom stage scrims are super ways to instantly amp up your shows. Custom band scrims and band backdrops are inexpensive, so any size band – even a brand new, up-and-coming band – can improve their stage presence with an affordable stage backdrop or a set of stage scrims. We know – we are biased. But it’s true, a backdrop or scrims can do amazing things for any band.
For sizes, we recommend 6’x6’ for the stage scrims, and for the stage backdrop you can consider 8’x10’, 10’x15’, 20’x25’ or any size in between or above. Give us a shout – Mendy would love to talk with you to find the right size for your band.
2. Practice Your Moves
At Northcoast Banners, we believe that great performance on stage at your shows is 90 percent preparation and 10 percent execution. Practicing your movements on stage and the specific synchronicity of your moves and your music is absolutely critical – BEFORE your shows.
We have worked with hundreds of bands on their stage backdrops and band scrims, and we’ve watched their shows with their band backdrops or stage scrims in action. We have learned a key lesson: regardless of how well designed the stage backdrop is or how awesome the music sounds, the movements on stage and general vibe from the band members bodies can make the show fly or die. So practice, practice, practice.
3. Design A Stunning Band Backdrop Or Band Scrims
Having seen hundreds of designs from hundreds of bands across the US and Canada, we have gained a lot of insight into what good design looks like – specifically for bands. We have learned:
• Bright colors that contrast sharply against each other create a sharp, vibrant design that will be noticed by everyone in your audience – even in low light venues
• Pastel colors – soft colors like pink, grey, green and purple – blend in with each other and do NOT pop on stage, especially in low-light venues
• Simplicity is best, and less is more. Keep it really simple and minimal, because the less that is on the stage backdrop or stage scrims, the more your actual logo will POP in your fan’s eyeballs.
4. Practice Your Music
This one sounds pretty obvious, but unfortunately many bands miss this foundational point entirely. Music is about practicing – performing is about executing. Your band needs to view the performance on stage – and the stage presence – as the act of execution. If you take this approach, your band will focus a lot more on practicing as a goal in and of itself. Then, the rest (playing on stage) is cakewalk.

My band is an awesome group, and we’re quickly growing and getting bigger shows – but we don’t have a stage backdrop or scrims. This problem resonates with us deeply, because we hear this problem from bands every day. Rock n’ roll bands always make a scene on stage – but what about your stage backdrop? Stage backdrops are a key factor in your stage presence, so it’s absolutely essential that you consider this inexpensive addition to your band at your shows. Here’s a solution to this problem.
Design Your Stage Backdrop The Right Way
Rock n’ roll bands often play in dark, dimly lit clubs and bars. The lighting on stage may or may not be adequate for your fans to make the small logo on your drum covers or bass heads, let alone a stage backdrop. Mendy, the band backdrops and stage scrims specialist has the following recommendations to make sure your stage backdrop makes a difference:
- Bright colors vs. Pastel Colors
- Size And Design Of Logo
With over a decade printing stage backdrops for bands and band scrims, we have seen a lot of artwork from bands across the spectrum of the music industry in the US and Canada. The number one no-no is pastel colors, in our view: pastel colors like pink, grey and green are colors that blend in with each other. A stage backdrop that is designed with soft colors will NOT make an impact in your audience’s eyes, since all your artwork will blend in their eyes.
Always make sure your stage backdrop contains bright colors that contrast sharply with each other. This will ensure that your logo POPS in any venue.
The logo size is another super-critical aspect in your stage backdrop. If the logo is too small and is surrounded by busy artwork, it will get lost in your audience’s eyes. We’ve seen too many pieces of artwork that look fantastic in theory, but unfortunately do not make a mark in your fan’s eyeballs.
The logo or the name of the band should therefore always be front and center, and the design should be minimal so your design PUSHES the logo into your fan’s eyeballs.
Get the right material. There are various materials that we can print on, but for the most part, we recommend 70/30-vinyl mesh. This is a fantastic material in that it both holds colors really well, it is very rugged and it’s light for easy travel on tours. For 90 percent of the bands we have worked with in the last decade, they have found this material to be the ideal choice for stage backdrops. It will print beautifully with your artwork and provide your band with the best bang for your buck.
We also offer a beautiful 13 oz. Solid vinyl, which is heavier than the vinyl mesh but it is a solid material. In terms of fabric materials, we can print band backdrops on dye sublimated poly poplin. This is a stunning fabric that prints artwork with excellent color reproduction. There are other materials and plenty of finishings too to make it easy to set up your stage backrop.

Get out there, get gigs, buy a band backdrop.
That’s the order of business of every band, especially for new groups. Specifically, we believe in the power of the last item in this to do list. When you buy a band backdrop, you have the ability to do wonders on stage. Stage backdrops are more than just banners – they are just as important as your music.
The 50/50 Rule
Band backdrops for stage are part of our 50/50 rule. This rule is simple:
- 50 percent of your show is the stage presence, choreography and performance
- 50 percent is the actual music you play and sing.
So when you buy a band backdrop, you’re meeting an acute need of your bands’ fans by providing them with a high quality stage presence. That’s why we believe that band backdrops are so key to a good performance, at any show.
Buy The Right Size Band Backdrop
Every band that I work with tells me that size of the band backdrop they buy or the stage scrim is a factor of how big their venues are. When you’re playing at huge festival, you need your logo to be seen for miles. But your budget may not allow for two stage backdrops, and if majority of your shows are in small venues, that huge band backdrop just won’t fit in a small bar. To learn more about sizes on stage, click here to view our photo gallery. This will give you a visual aid to understanding how band backdrops and band scrims actually look on stage. You can always contact us and we will be happy to guide you in this process.
Where To Buy A Backdrop?
