How To Design A Banner For Print With Graphic Design

What are the specific graphic design specifications for my band banner artwork to be designed?

Not surprisingly, banner design is a commonly asked question among many bands and graphic designers. Since graphic design for brochures, social media and other marketing uses are typically smaller spaces, many designs are not set up for printing large format band backdrops, or festival banners. Taking a tiny JPG and blowing up the graphic design for a print banner will simply distort the image and produce a fuzzy looking banner.

Below we have explained the artwork specifications for you, feel free to pass this on to your graphic artist and designers too!

Graphic Design Printed Banners

Vector Format

Types of files includes:

  • AI
  • EPS
  • PDF

Vector files can be saved at any image size in the correct aspect ratio. So for example, an 8’ x 10’ banner would be 8”HIGH x 10” WIDE.

Raster Format

Types of files include:

  • JPG
  • GIF
  • PNG
  • PSB
  • PSD

Raster files should be saved at 150 dpi in full print size. So for an 8’x10’ printed banner it would be 96” HIGH x 120” WIDE. Simply multiply the size by 12 to calculate the measurements, since there are 12″ in a foot.

If you are having a hard time saving such a large file to your computer, you can try saving it at half that size, so for the 8’x10’ it would be 48” HIGH x 60” WIDE at 300 dpi. This provides us with double the dpi, so that we resize it for printing, we’ll still retain a decent amount of resolution and we can typically print at very high definition if provided this size file.

If you are still having trouble working with your art file, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. We are happy to help walk you through the process.  If you have a file that is already designed, and it is too low resolution, send it over to us and we can help. We have a graphic vectorization service that can bring most art files up to the required resolution so that your printed stage banner will look beautiful. We also work with a number of graphic designers who can assist with full graphic design services from scratch.

How To Build A Stage Stand For Your Band Scrims Or Stage Backdrop

Buying a stage scrim is a great first step to building your band’s identity. Now, you can easily set up your stage backdrop or scrim by following NorthcoastBanners simple video. For about $15 in PVC piping, you’ll have your stage banners and band scrims set up in minutes.

6’x6′ Stage Stand

Tools Needed:

  • Hacksaw
  • Sharpie Marker

Materials for the Stage Stand**:

  • 4 – 1″ x 10′ PVC Pipe
  • 2 – 1″ 90 Degree Elbow Joints
  • 4 – 1″ Tee Joints

**For two stands just double the quantity of the materials.

Costs for Stage Stand Materials

Costs for everything is around $15 from your local hardware store

Cut PVC Pipe to the Following Lengths:

  • 2 – 6’2″ (74″) * Top and Bottom
  • 2 – 5’7.5″ (67.5″) * Sides
  • 2 – 7″
  • 4 – 12″

**For different size banners, add 2″ to your banner’s width for the top and bottom poles, and subtract 4.5″ from the banner’s height for the vertical poles; this is to accommodate for elbow and tee joints. These dimensions may be slightly different for you depending on your materials.

Assembly Process for the Stage Stand:

  1. Assemble feet first, followed by attaching the side poles (67.5″ Lengths) to the feet.
  2. Slide the top and bottom poles (74″ Lengths) through the pole pockets on your stage scrim and then attach to the sides.

Stage Stands Outdoors:

For outdoor uses, we recommend placing sand bags or some sort of weight at the bottom of the feet for added stability.

Best Materials For Band Backdrops And Stage Scrims

When your band sets out to buy a new band backdrop or band scrim, the options can be confusing. What material is best for a stage backdrop? Which materials allow for sound to pass through, and make the colors pop? It is essential that your band considers how you will be using the banners – indoors or outdoors, how you will hang them, and where in the venue – in order to purchase the right band backdrop. Here’s some helpful tips on buying the right materials.

1. Rugged Materials:

Vinyl mesh is a very rugged material – there’s no need to worry about the occasional (or frequent) beer spill on your stage scrims by an excited fan. Dirt, drinks and even food can be brushed right off a vinyl mesh stage backdrop, or wiped off with a damp piece of towel paper. You can learn more about all our materials and and sizes here.

2. Stage Backdrop Materials In Sunlight

For playing at outdoor shows like festivals, vinyl mesh is the best material. It does not get ruined easily in the sun, and can last several years of outdoor playing. Dye sublimated poly poplin band backdrops do not hold up well in the sunlight, and may need to be replaced as frequently as every 6 months.

3. Acoustic Transparency:

Since vinyl mesh is 70 percent material and 30 percent holes, these stage backdrops will allow for sound to pass through.  So even if you place your band backdrop smack in front of your players or speakers, there’s no cause for concern.

4. Bright Colors:

While vinyl mesh is far and away our most popular material with bands, we can also print on beautiful dye sublimated poly poplin. This is a fine fabric upon which colors look especially bright.

5. Merch Banners:

For your merchandise table where you sell your bands’ T-Shirts and bracelets and other promotional items, we most often print on a crisp 13 ounce solid vinyl. Colors on this material look solid and bright.

6. Cost Effective Materials:

Vinyl mesh is about half the price of poly poplin or even cheaper, and it looks fantastic on stage. Over all, it is our most popular material for bands; 90  percent of our band backdrops are printed on 70/30 vinyl mesh. Spring Creek Station Performs With A Stunning New Band Backdrop

8x10 stage backdrops

Spring Creek Station, a country music band from central Illinois just played in Chillicothe, IL as the opener for country star Lee Brice. The show was a hit – and so was their beautiful new band backdrop from Northcoast Banners, says Harold Robinson, a player in the band.

“The banner is one of the single best investments we made for the band,” Robinson beams. “It gave us instant recognition without saying a word and people had a visual name to remember.”

Spring Creek Station’s band backdrop was far smaller than stage banner for Lee Brice, and yet, their backdrop completely converted the stage for their performance.

But they didn’t stop there. Increasingly, bands are choosing custom band backdrops that fit right in to smaller venues. With a range of small to large stage backdrops, it’s easy to make any stage your own, no matter where you play.

Robinson agrees. “Having the custom size banner for different size venues is a definite plus, which is why we got the large single back drop for larger shows and smaller side stage scrims for more intimate shows,” he says.

How To Buy Band Scrims

band scrims

Band scrims are affordable stage banners for small and up-and-coming bands. These stage banners, while smaller than large stage backdrops, can make a big difference on stage.

Cost

The cost of a stage scrim depends on two factors:

  • Size of the scrim
  • Material of the scrim

The size of the stage scrim depends on how much space you have on stage, and how large you want your banners to be. It is often helpful to make a list of size venues your band plays at before you buy your band scrims. Stages come in all sorts of sizes, so it’s critical that you to know the dimensions of the stages where you will be playing before you move forward with sizes. We have experience with band banners at hundreds of venues across the US, and we can help you find the right size banner.

For bands on a budget, band scrims are ideal since they are considerably cheaper than large band backdrops – and they can make a big impact even at large, outdoor festivals.

For band scrim materials, we find vinyl mesh to be the most appropriate material. It is a 70/30 weave, which means that you can use these banners as an amp scrim: you can place them right in front of your speakers.

Sizes

Finding the right size is key for any stage banner, but for band scrims, a set of two 6’x6′ vinyl mesh scrims (or stage mesh) are ideal. We have printed this size for many brand new, small bands who have small shows, and it works beautifully in small clubs and bars. We can print scrims at any size – contact us for prices of  ANY size band scrims.

Finishings

We provide high grade finishings on all our stage scrims. Generally, we finish our band scrims with both grommets on all sides and 2.5″ pole pockets on the top and bottom – both at no extra cost – so your band has the option of hanging the banner with a cord, or using a stage stand. Of course, we have other finishings as well, and we can add whichever finishings you need.

How To Set Up A Band Backdrop With Grommets And Pole Pockets

There are several ways to set up your band backdrop or stage scrims. When buying band backdrops, make sure to inquire about the finishings, as these are very important for your setup before shows.

Grommets

Our stage backdrops and stage scrims can be customized with grommets along every two feet, on all four sides of the band backdrop or scrim. These are very handy, as they can be used to hang your banner just about any way possible at any venue. All you need is some zip ties, or a piece of cord to thread through the grommets, and you will be set up anywhere you go. We generally advise grommets on every banner, just to ensure that you’ll always have this option if you need it.

Pole Pockets

2.5″ pole pockets on top and bottom of your stage banner are popular ways to hang your stage backdrop. Stage scrims and stage backdrops look great on a clean smart stage stand. You can use a stage stand to hang your banners using our simple and easy video that shows you how to create a stage stand in minutes, with about $15 in PVC piping. We sell a stand that fits a banner that is up to 8’x10′ in size.  The stand is sold only as an add-on to any banner purchase.

Velcro

We can provide the option of velcro strips along the back of your stage backdrops, so you can easily stick them up. This is especially handy with small stage banners.

Please contact us to learn more about finishings for your band backdrops, I’ll be happy to help.
